Inside a Michigan company where defense-level engineering, American steel, and seasoned pit knowledge are reshaping how serious barbecue equipment is built.

SAGINAW, Mich. - PrAtlas -- In an era when much of the barbecue equipment market has shifted toward imported materials and mass production, one American company is moving in the opposite direction- applying aerospace and defense, as well as industrial manufacturing standards to traditional offset smokers.

Superior Smokers manufactures premium offset barbecue smokers in Saginaw, Michigan, using American steel, domestic labor, and engineering processes typically reserved for mission-critical equipment. Although the company produces barbecue equipment, its roots are in industrial fabrication, where precision, accountability, and consistency are essential.

Superior Smokers was founded by Jeremy Hengy, Camron Pytleski, and barbecue influencer Jeremy Yoder of MadScientistBBQ. The partnership was formed after Hengy invited Yoder to tour the company's Saginaw manufacturing facility and see firsthand what its engineers build outside the barbecue world.

"Once Jeremy walked the facility and saw the kind of aerospace, defense, and industrial equipment our engineers produce, the conversation shifted immediately," Hengy said. "We weren't talking about trends or price points. We were talking about what an offset smoker should be if it were built to the same standards as high-consequence equipment."

The visit sparked a collaborative process in which the founders analyzed the best ideas from smokers they had cooked on over the years - what worked, what failed, and where compromises were being made across the industry. That process ultimately led to the creation of The Evolution, Superior Smokers' flagship offset smoker.

Rather than approaching the product as a consumer appliance, Superior Smokers design each smoker as mission-critical equipment. Material selection, weld integrity, airflow balance, and thermal performance are engineered with the same discipline used in aerospace systems, defense hardware, and other performance critical manufacturing projects.

"We already operate in environments where failure isn't acceptable," Hengy said. "We're not lowering the bar just because the application happens to be barbecue."

While Yoder plays a significant role in product development and cooking performance validation through MadScientistBBQ, Hengy oversees day-to-day operations and serves as the public face of the brand. Customers communicate directly with Hengy before and after purchase, and he represents Superior Smokers across social media and public engagement.

As interest continues to grow nationwide for American-made products built with transparency and durability, Superior Smokers represents a crossover between traditional barbecue culture and modern American manufacturing, a company proving that old-school fire and next-level engineering don't have to exist in separate worlds.
