Today's landmark defense contract launches the FDA-approved SPARC-TMS trial while NRx simultaneously advances its preservative-free ketamine program, HOPE Therapeutics and an expanding CNS pipeline

MIAMI - PrAtlas -- NRx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (N A S D A Q: NRXP) $NRXP enters the final days of September with one of its most significant developments of 2026: its NRx Defense Systems subsidiary has been awarded an initial $11,177,757.27 prime contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to evaluate robotic magnetic stimulation in combination with NRX-101 for treatment-resistant depression.

Even more importantly for investors, the underlying SPARC-TMS clinical trial has received FDA approval and will now begin enrolling patients. The program is designed to test whether an entire course of TMS can potentially be delivered in a single day when combined with NRX-101 and robotic neuronavigated TMS.

This is particularly notable because NRx had previously disclosed that it had been selected by DARPA for the program with anticipated non-dilutive funding exceeding $11.5 million, subject to contracting. Today's announcement represents the actual initial contract award of $11.18 million, providing a significant validation of the program while supporting its clinical development without relying solely on equity financing.

Today's $11.18 Million DARPA Catalyst

The SPARC-TMS program — Synaptic Plasticity Augmented Rapid Circuit Stimulation — is being conducted by NRx Defense Systems in partnership with Harvard Medical School's McLean Hospital, Arizona State University, HOPE Therapeutics, Zeta Surgical Systems and Neurocare of America.

The trial is expected to evaluate a single-day treatment approach combining robotic neuronavigated TMS with NRX-101.

According to today's announcement:
  • $11,177,757.27 initial DARPA prime contract awarded
  • FDA-approved SPARC-TMS trial can now begin enrolling patients
  • Study sites include McLean Hospital, Arizona State University and HOPE Therapeutics
  • Plans are underway to expand the program to leading military hospitals
  • If the clinical results are successfully replicated, the study could potentially serve as an FDA registration study for NRX-101 in combination with TMS.

NRx also highlighted previously published real-world findings showing 91% treatment response and 69% remission at three months following traditional TMS combined with D-cycloserine. Those findings are not evidence that the SPARC-TMS trial will produce the same results; the company will need to establish the efficacy and safety of the new protocol through the clinical trial.

The FDA Ketamine Story Is Also Moving Forward

While today's DARPA announcement grabs the spotlight, NRx has another major potential catalyst developing.

More on PrAtlas
On September 15, the company announced that the FDA had reclassified the amendment concerning the vial for preservative-free ketamine from a Major Amendment to a Minor Amendment and revised the GDUFA goal date to November 10, 2026.

That follows the August FDA first-cycle review of NRx's ANDA, when the agency identified no major deficiencies involving the ketamine product, ingredients, proposed labeling, CMC or other product-related matters. The remaining issue involved certification concerning the luer-lock vial.

NRx reported that the same vial system was already being used in three FDA-approved ANDA products, with approximately 11.9 million units shipped over the preceding 12 months without complaints, returns, adverse events or recalls. The company also stated that no new clinical, safety or efficacy data were required for ANDA approval.

The November 10 GDUFA date therefore gives investors a clearly defined regulatory milestone to watch.

Commercial Preparation Is Already Underway

NRx isn't waiting until a potential approval to prepare its commercial infrastructure.

The company began commercial-scale manufacturing of preservative-free ketamine in May, with manufacturing designed to scale as demand develops. By August, NRx reported that it was building an initial launch inventory of approximately 5 million doses, while targeting manufacturing capacity of approximately 1 million doses per month after launch.

NRx also appointed Glenn Tyson as its first Chief Commercial Officer and began building a commercial launch organization.

That combination — regulatory progress, manufacturing preparation and commercial personnel — gives the ketamine program a considerably different profile than a purely early-stage research program.

HOPE Therapeutics and Robotic TMS Add Another Layer

NRXP's story has also expanded beyond its pharmaceutical pipeline.

In June, HOPE Therapeutics treated its first patients using Zeta Surgical's FDA-cleared Zeta TMS Navigation System at clinics in West Palm Beach and Sarasota, Florida. The system uses AI-driven image guidance and computer vision to track TMS positioning with submillimetric accuracy.

Then, on September 11, NRx announced that HOPE's clinical team had begun training for deployment of Zeta Surgical's newly FDA-cleared TMS Robotic System in Florida. The robotic system builds on the navigation platform and is designed to position and continually adjust the TMS coil with submillimeter precision.

That technology is now directly connected to today's DARPA-funded SPARC-TMS program.

NRX-101 Continues to Build Strategic Optionality

NRX-101 received FDA clearance to proceed with a Phase 2/3 trial combining the therapy with robotic-enabled TMS back in May. The planned program includes civilian and military treatment facilities and was designed around the potential for rapid treatment of treatment-resistant depression.

In June, FDA also granted an Expanded Access Protocol for NRX-101 in combination with accelerated TMS, providing another avenue for physicians to access the investigational therapy for appropriate patients who cannot participate in the pivotal trial.

A Broader CNS Pipeline Is Emerging

NRXP's recent developments increasingly show a company building multiple potential value drivers rather than relying on one program.

In September, NRx's GeNeuro subsidiary announced European patent protection for GNK-301, a monoclonal antibody candidate targeting HERV-K envelope protein in ALS. GeNeuro has initiated GMP manufacturing and anticipates Phase 1 testing in ALS in the second half of 2027, subject to development and regulatory progress.

NRx also strengthened its balance sheet earlier this year by closing a $22.3 million public offering, with proceeds intended for working capital and general corporate purposes.

Why Investors Are Watching $NRXP Closely

The latest developments create several distinct catalysts:
  • $11.18 million DARPA prime contract awarded today
  • FDA-approved SPARC-TMS trial moving into patient enrollment
  • November 10, 2026 FDA GDUFA goal date for the preservative-free ketamine ANDA
  • 5 million-dose Commercial Inventories being built
  • HOPE/Zeta robotic TMS deployment progressing in Florida
  • NRX-101 advancing through an FDA-cleared clinical program
  • European patent protection and future Phase 1 potential for GNK-301
  • $22.3 million public financing completed earlier this year

Taken together, these developments give NRx Pharmaceuticals several independent milestones to follow into the fourth quarter and beyond.

For investors, the most important distinction is that some catalysts are now achieved while others remain prospective. Today's $11.18 million DARPA contract and FDA clearance of SPARC-TMS are concrete milestones. Potential FDA approval of preservative-free ketamine, clinical outcomes from SPARC-TMS, future NRX-101 approval and commercialization, and GNK-301 development remain subject to regulatory, clinical and commercial risks.

Still, September 30, 2026 represents a significant new chapter for NRx Pharmaceuticals. The company now has an actual DARPA-funded clinical program, a defined FDA goal date for its preservative-free ketamine ANDA, an expanding robotic-TMS platform through HOPE, and a growing CNS pipeline.

For $NRXP shareholders and investors watching the company closely, the fourth quarter could therefore be an important period as these programs move from development and preparation toward increasingly tangible clinical, regulatory and commercial milestones.
